Summary
- Notum works offline. There's no account, no cloud sync and no server of mine for your data to go to.
- Everything you enter (subscriptions, prices, renewal dates, groups, settings) stays on your device.
- Reminders are scheduled by your phone itself. Nothing is sent anywhere to deliver them.
- The only way your data leaves the device is a backup file that you choose to export and put somewhere.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and nothing to sell.
Notum helps you keep track of the subscriptions you pay for and when they renew. It’s built to work entirely offline: there’s no online account and no cloud sync, and I have no plans to add them. This page explains what the app handles, where it stays, and what you can do about it. It applies to the Notum app on iOS. Notum is made by Waristone (“I”, “me”), a one-person studio in Manitoba, Canada. Because Notum runs entirely on your device, the data you enter never reaches me.
What Notum stores, and where
Notum doesn’t need an account, and it doesn’t ask for your name, email, phone number, contacts, location, photos or any advertising ID. It saves the following in its own storage on your device:
- the subscriptions you add: the service name, amount and currency, billing cycle, next renewal or trial-end date, and the payment history you record in the app;
- an optional payment-method label you can type for your own reference, such as “Visa” or “PayPal”. It’s just a label. Notum doesn’t process payments and never asks for card numbers, bank details or other financial credentials;
- the groups you create to organize your subscriptions;
- your preferences, such as default currency, theme, notification times and which reminders are on.
This is used only to run the app on your device: to show your subscriptions and totals, work out upcoming renewal dates, and schedule your reminders. None of it is sent to me or anyone else.
Reminders
If you turn reminders on, Notum schedules local notifications on your device: a weekly digest of upcoming renewals and a monthly summary. Your phone’s operating system creates and delivers them. No subscription names, amounts or dates are sent to me or to any outside service to do this.
Notum asks for notification permission only after you add your first subscription, never on launch. You can turn individual reminders on or off in the app, or turn notifications off for Notum in the Settings app.
Backups you export
You can export a backup of your data as a single .notum file. You always start this: the app hands the file to the standard iOS share sheet, and you decide where it goes (Files, your own cloud drive, an email to yourself, and so on). You can restore it later with the import option, which uses the iOS document picker.
Notum never uploads backup files on its own. Once you put a backup in another service, such as iCloud Drive, Google Drive or email, that copy is under your control and that service’s privacy policy.
Backup files aren’t encrypted by Notum. Treat them like any other personal document and keep them somewhere you trust.
Apple
The only outside party involved is Apple, which runs the platform:
- iCloud Backup. If you use iCloud Backup, iOS may include Notum’s data in your device backup. Apple handles this under its privacy policy. You can leave Notum out of iCloud Backup in the Settings app.
- Crash reports. If you’ve chosen to share diagnostics with app developers, Apple’s App Store Connect may show me aggregated, de-identified crash reports and performance figures. They don’t include your subscriptions, your name or anything I could use to identify you.
What I don’t do
- No ads, and no advertising SDKs.
- No analytics. I don’t collect usage statistics, event logs, cookies or device identifiers, and I don’t measure how you use the app.
- No tracking across other companies’ apps or websites. Notum doesn’t ask for App Tracking Transparency permission because there’s nothing to track.
- No payments or financial account information.
- No server that stores your subscriptions. I hold no copy of your data.
Security and retention
Your data is protected by your device’s own security, including your passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, and device encryption. Keeping a passcode on and iOS up to date is the best protection.
I keep nothing, so there’s nothing for me to retain. Your data stays on your device until you erase it in the app or delete the app. Backup files stay wherever you put them until you delete them.
Your choices
Notum has no accounts, so there’s no account to delete. You’re in control of everything:
- Erase your data. Settings → Erase all data clears your subscriptions, groups, history and preferences.
- Delete the app. Removing Notum deletes everything it stored on the device.
- Manage reminders. Turn reminders on or off in the app, or turn off notifications for Notum in the Settings app.
- Take a copy. Export gives you a portable copy of everything you’ve entered.
Your rights, wherever you live
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, Canada’s PIPEDA, Quebec’s Law 25, or California’s CCPA and similar US state laws), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or get a portable copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict its use, and to withdraw consent. Because Notum keeps your information only on your device and I never receive it, I hold nothing to give you, change or delete. You can do all of it yourself in the app: view and edit your data, export it, or erase it.
The only data I receive is the aggregated, de-identified diagnostics described above, which I use to keep the app stable, a legitimate interest under the GDPR. Reminders are scheduled with your consent, which you can withdraw by turning notifications off. Notum doesn’t make automated decisions about you, doesn’t sell or share personal information, and doesn’t do targeted advertising or profiling.
If you have a concern, email me. You can also complain to your local data protection authority, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or, in Quebec, the Commission d’accès à l’information. The person in charge of protecting personal information at Waristone can be reached at support@waristone.com.
Notum itself doesn’t move your data across borders. If you store a backup with a cloud service, or Apple stores your iCloud Backup, that data may be held in other countries, including the United States, under those providers’ own safeguards.
Children
Notum isn’t meant for children under 13 (or the minimum age where you live, which is 16 in some EU countries), and I don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. In any case, the app stores everything on the device and I receive nothing. If a child has used the app, deleting it removes the data.
Changes
If how Notum handles information changes, I’ll update this page and its date. Bigger changes, such as adding an account, analytics or anything that sends your data off the device, will be pointed out in the app before they take effect.
